About the Course
If you are exploring the subject for the first time with the view to go on to further interior design studies then this course will provide you with expert guidance and appropriate portfolio advice. This course is aimed at anyone who wishes to learn research and drawing skills, how to appreciate the way people use and move through a space and how to create beautiful and functional designs. Beginning in London, learning will be derived from your own personal response and within parameters set by a theoretical client brief. Colour theory, materials and textures will be explored and upon completion you will understand the basics of what makes a good designer. The course will be studio based, with an emphasis on hand rendering and presenting design solutions in visual form supported by group critiques and discussions. There will be a major project running throughout your time London, supported by smaller workshops and demonstrations to improve specific design skills. There will be visits to relevant places of design interest to provide you with inspiration and opportunities to record ideas and images that will become valuable tools in future studies. When you reach Milan your initial understanding and experience of interior design will be further developed. Your studies will be about understanding interior living spaces and the sensitivity that designers need to have towards the lifestyles of both the individual and the masses. Your project will deal with the dimensions of the city and the time spent by the population in public and private living. You will start with personal research of interior spaces, collecting data through drawings, pictures and texts. You will be asked to design an interior for a specific location in Milan on the basis of this research and to seek out the talking wallpapers that surround us. The final results will be presented in an exhibition, a booklet and a CD/DVD. You will need to be self-motivated and curious, ready to work as individuals and in groups. Active participation in the seminars and studios is essential. Drawing and model-making skills are beneficial but not essential as you will be asked to present your ideas in the medium of your choice, whether hand drawn or digital means. A laptop may be of use but is again not essential, but a digital camera is important for recording information and will help your final project in Milan
Course Leader
Pascal Anson is a three dimensional designer. He has worked across the discipline and has experience of building real and virtual spaces. His interior design work stretches from exhibition spaces to international airports. Francesco Librizzi graduated in Architecture from Palermo University in 2004. In 2005 he founded his own studio for design and architecture in Milan. He has taught at University of Palermo (Faculty of Architecture), lectures at Domus Academy and currently teaches on a variety of interior design courses at NABA
Topics Covered
In London you will work on one project that is brand related which will enable you to access a palate of materials, colours and textures with which to design. Practical design exercises will be accompanied by applying new skills to the brief. In Milan your project work will also include making a presentation as a designer and a member of a team with the support of a model and/or a short story in digital format, and reporting the importance of research and teamwork.
Who Should Attend?
The course is aimed at ambitious beginners who have never studied interior design and also professionals, such as architects or textile designers, who want to gain some experience of designing an interior for the first time. The projects are open and flexible enough to appeal to many different approaches.
